Album Review: 0N0 – Unwavering Resonance (The House Of What You See)

Bratislava, Slovakia-based industrial/experimental doom/death metal trio 0N0 will release their third album, Unwavering Resonance on June 24th, 2022 via The House Of What You See. It is the follow-up to the group’s two 2019 releases, Cloaked Climax Concealed (Transcending Obscurity Records) and a separate split effort release with German band Owl.

In simple terms, our previous album Reconstruction and Synthesis focused on themes of transcendence and mindscapes whereas Unwavering Resonance focuses on manifestation bound to existence.

The word simple just can’t be used at any stage when talking about 0N0’s new album, Unwavering Resonance. The depth and complexities on show are simply too profound, too encompassing, too eclectic, and too experimental.

Stunning? That’s one word. Another is baffling. Such is the unique make-up of this album. An album that features only four tracks, but each is a gargantuan slab of music. Starting with the tome that is Clay Weight, it’s here that 0N0 display the slumbering beast of doom, revitalised by elements of industrial heaviness and experimental metal, in all its glory. Marvel at size of its teeth and fear how it gazes upon you with hungry eyes. Death awaits and 0N0 are not merciful, yet it is so damn hypnotic.

Much shorter, at a little over 5-minutes, Shattering is far more chaotic and 0N0 seem barely in control. Yet, the instrumental wildness is balanced by vocals that are rooted in death metal. Then, because 0N0 are impossibly creative, the track twists and suddenly, there’s melody and atmosphere. Dark melody and cold atmosphere, but it’s there.

Following that, the title track begins with similar industrial-tinged atmosphere. Before the weight of 0N0’s experimental doom side takes over to dominate and as the track evolves, so does the brutality of it all. There’s a lot of layers to this track and peeling them all off can’t be done it one singular sitting. Which does apply to the album as a whole. For something only four tracks long, it will leave you spent.

Especially when you must experience the godliness of Wander the Vacant Twilight. A track that combines the wonder of 0N0’s atmospheric side, with the gnarly death and doom side the band continues to excel at. A true showcase of the inordinate powers this band possesses. Prepare to be put under their hypnotic gaze through the sheer, unyielding supremacy of Unwavering Resonance.
