Interview: Zero One (Written)
Zero One, the Edinburgh-based metalcore quintet will release their sophomore EP, ‘Faults In My Design’, on May 31st, 2024.
1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
I’m Dylan Thomson, drummer for Edinburgh metalcore quintet Zero One. We started up in 2019 as just a few friends getting together to mess around with ideas, play some covers and see where it went. We just want to create something that we would want to hear if we were looking for new music.
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?
Honestly, sometimes I just say ‘metal’, it really depends how much people know. You could say it’s angry or aggressive, but we also try to incorporate delicate elements to our music too.
3. What’s currently going on in your camp? New releases? Tours? Etc.
We’ve got a new EP titled ‘Faults In My Design’ releasing on the 31st of May. It largely deals with the topic of mental health, drawing from some of our personal experiences to translate those feelings into something positive. I’d say it’s our most important work to date – creating the record allowed us to push our creative boundaries, refine our songwriting, but still have fun doing it.
4. What has been the most positive experience of making music to date for you?
I love the process of making music – trying out ideas with the band through to seeing all the pieces come together for the final thing. I love it.
5. Likewise, what has been some of the more challenging aspects and how have you overcome them?
Playing live can be stressful. Don’t get me wrong – we love it, and when we’re up there it’s always a blast, but it’s still easy to get nerves in the run up to shows. Another thing has got to be being stuck in a writing block. Nothing worse than not being able to finish a track – it gets in your head.
6. How do you handle the modern expectations of being in a band? Always online, having to put out content constantly, your success measured in likes and follows?
We try not to think about it too much. At the end of the day, this is a hobby for us because we enjoy it. If what we do resonates with you or you just vibe with it, then much love to you, that’s what matters.
7. What’s something that really ‘grinds your gears’ about the industry/business these days and what would you propose is done to combat it?
I’d love the metal scene to be more accessible. You see people gatekeeping far too often and that’s just not what it should be about.
8. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support your music?
We appreciate anything people do to support our music – whether it’s coming to see us live and picking up a tee or just listening to our tracks in your day to day. It all means the world to us.
9. Outside of the music, what’s do you do to relax?
I personally love photography. There’s something so satisfying about finding great angles through to editing to get a perfect shot.
