Album Review: Consecration – Cinis (Redefining Darkness Records)

Cinis, taken from the Latin meaning of cold ashes, is the new album from UK death and doom outfit, Consecration. It will be released on June 17th, 2022 via Redefining Darkness Records.

If you like your metal miserable sounding then Consecration have just what you need with Cinis. An album to turn even the sunniest disposition into something gloomy and hate-filled. An album filled with cold doom and suffocating death, Cinis is the soundtrack to desolate agony.

Sounds fun, right?

It’s not. At times, it almost shares more in common with funeral doom, so miserable sounding is it. However, the sickening infusion of death metal adds meatier focus and the weight becomes just that little bit more bearable. With tracks that reach the nine-minute mark (These Fleeting Memories and Unto the Earth Bethralled) and even one that passes the elven-minute mark (Embrace of Perpetual Mourning), there’s a lot of wretchedness to dwell within here. Consecration take their sweet, sweet time crushing the spirit.

So, what’s so appealing about it?

Simply that Consecration are so very good at providing such a forsaken soundtrack. Simply because the combination of death and doom mesh so well together and each track feels like the rivets of a constructed bastion of hell. It’s a place of suffering but the structure is so impressive, all you can do is stand and admire. Before your soul is completely consumed.
