Album Review: Terminal Nation – Holocene Extinction (20 Buck Spin)

America is a tinderbox. Lockdowns, pandemic, police brutality, kleptocracy, the orange menace. The injustice system is alive and well. Since day one Terminal Nation has been shining a light on it all through their crushing music, point blank lyrics, merch and media, lashing out at institutional corruption and racist power structures. And not from a liberal coastal enclave where it’s a generally welcome message but from Deep Red Arkansas.

Now with the new album ‘Holocene Extinction’ at hand, Terminal Nation return at a pivotal moment, where lines are being drawn and the possibilities of compromise are going up in smoke. The fightback begins on August 7th 2020.

We’re pretty familiar with Terminal Nation’s brand of vehemence, having reviewed their 2017 EP, Absolute Control and the split EP (with Neckbeard Deathcamp), One Party System in 2019. We’re fans, even if their brand of hardcore/death metal/power-violence hasn’t always hit the mark.

Holocene Extinction hits the mark. Hard enough to smash it to pieces and continue onwards.

This is an angry album. Filled to the brim with vitriol and venom but aimed at subjects that should fill most with anger. If you’re not raging about it, you should be and what we have here is the soundtrack to that incandescent fury.

Unlike the 2017 EP, the quality in production here makes for a much improved and more detailed listen. You can pick out and focus on what exactly Terminal Nation are trying to express. Which is very important considering how they distil their subject matter into such intense noise.

It’s unbearably heavy from the very first track to the very last one. Over half an hour of an utter battering from a band that knows how to dish it out effectively. Terminal Nation has something to say, get listening.
