Interview: Talking Horror with Venice Revive (Written)
Who doesn’t love a bit of horror? In this interview we spoke to symphonic metalcore band Venice Revive about all things horror.
1. What’s some of your earliest memories surrounding horror films and at what age do you think you experienced your first one?
I’ve never feared horror! Probably my autism, but since I’m aware nothing will happen to me, jump scares or stress-building in movies just don’t phase me.
I’m a good hand holder and hugger when watching horror movies with partners though, that’s a huge plus.
Friends took me to see the conjuring and it didn’t scare me at all, I guess my favourite horror franchise is the Scary Movie parody because of that!
2. What effect do you think it had on you, either positive or negative?
It’s super fun to watch my friends shaking while I just laugh at them, definitely positive.
3. Do you have a particular moment in horror, be it a specific film or even a scene, that defined your childhood?
Annabelle made me go work in horror escape rooms, I was an amazing actor too!

4. What used to scare you?
When I was a little kid, before I got my phone, I was stuck in an elevator for a couple of hours when all the grown ups were at work, it was also before there were quick calls to the elevator’s maker/operator help centre, only an alarm sound to hope someone would hear you.
Knowing I was stuck there for who knows how long and know one’s coming to help, that’s something 8 years old me certainly didn’t enjoy.
5. How did your early experiences blossom into a love of all things horror?
When I went to horror escape room with friends, they were all super scared and I always went into rooms first, I enjoy the experience and the actors trying to scare me, it’s so much fun.
6. Do you have a particular era or style of horror that you deem the best? If so, which one, why, and what are some examples of the best of that era/style?
I don’t think I have a favourite, but I definitely check out everything Ice Nine Kills writes about!

7. How about genres – are you a slasher fan, paranormal lover, gorefest enjoyer, etc, or is a little bit of everything ok with you?
Psychological, without a second thought. They’re the ones who truly have depth in their script.
8. Likewise, what’s the best horror film to watch with a group (beers and popcorn included) and why?
Anything that would make them shake like crazy so I can take pictures and laugh.
9. What is an overrated film or franchise? Please explain.
The Saw. Most shallow thing I’ve ever seen. Generally, I don’t enjoy watching people just get murdered over and over again for no reason. You learned from an earlier question that I need depth.
