Album Review: Bastard Cröss – Crossripper (Morbid and Miserable)

This Halloween, blackened metalpunk band Bastard Cröss will unveil the auditory blasphemy that is their forthcoming album, ‘Crossripper’ via Morbid and Miserable. The debut full-length has been heavily inspired by horror movies and draws from religious history notably dark and violent documented events.

A sinful and sinister release that sits somewhere between black metal and crust punk. Delivering nine tracks of malevolent heaviness and speed, Bastard Cröss’ style is familiar, but the group throw enough of their own nuances in to make the record stand out as their own thing. Interestingly, across the album’s runtime, they show off variety and deliver a cacophony of different styles.

From the outright heavy and head banging punk metal showcase that is Parasitic, to the blackened intensity that the title track offers, screaming guitar solo included. To the frenetic ferocity of Lycan Knights, the thrashy riff-driven Headless, and the salacious wickedness of Satanic Pandemonium, Bastard Cröss do not disappoint as far as relentless, lively, and effective blackened punk heaviness goes. Even the rawness is quite compelling, giving their sound a retro feel, but without losing quality.

A solid first half, Bastard Cröss then take us down into the depths with the mighty Sarcophagus. The riff and drum combo at its most potent here, while the vocals howl and scream with repulsive intent. Before hitting us with undue punk force via the wicked Demons at Midnight, and the feral metallised sounding Phantom Pestilence. A hard-hitting bunch that keeps the hellish fires stoked high.

It’s an album you’ll be compelled to keep listening to, even as it reaches its savage end via the ferocious Behead the Priest. A no-nonsense closer that caps off a potent record. It doesn’t need deep analysis, or to be pulled apart and broken down, it’s heavy, fast, and nasty sounding blackened punk metal delivered with garish intent and impressive ability. If that’s your jam, then you are going to have a good time with it.
