EP Review: Crashface – Prototype (Self Released)

Prototype is the new EP from misanthropic alternative rockers Crashface. Due on the10th of May 2023. A six-track experiment and exploration of new avenues for the London-based punk duo.

As the band explains:

PROTOTYPE is what it says. It’s a trial. A test-dummy. It’s throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. The theme of trial and error runs throughout this EP as it’s something we’ve been struggling with over the past year or so, but we’re both super proud of what we’ve created. We’ve been writing pretty heavily and these are definitely the tracks we think represent us the best and where we’re going in the near future. The writing process has been more challenging this time round, but I think it’s birthed our most electric tracks yet. As always, now we’re just happy that now we get to share them with you. BRACE BRACE BRACE X.

Hmmm… an EP of trial and error. That’s brave. Good thing what Crashface have produced here is so damn convincing.

It is undeniably a wide-ranging release that moves the band’s sound in new directions while still delivering alt-punk and rock catchiness. Crashface experimenting with more electronica, more effects, and heavier instrumentation across the six tracks. Yet, it’s not such a tone shift that it’s going to isolate those who have been with them on their phenomenal rise to stardom.

It’s just different and different can be good. Especially when it represents such a dynamic set of tracks and such a level of creativity. Everyone is going to have their favourite. For example; Lovedoom is a banger of an anthem, but aside from some wild heaviness, No Hands doesn’t quite hit. Yet, that’s also a track that could easily be the most popular song from this EP. It’s the eclectic makeup of Prototype and it’s going to crate a variety of feelings.

All that being said, if this is what represents Crashface going forward, their listener base is only going to grow. That much is clear.
