Album Review: Wreck-Defy – Remnants of Pain (Inverse Records)
Canadian thrash metal band Wreck-Defy will release their new album ‘Remnants of Pain’ which is set to be released on September 27th 2019 by Finnish record label Inverse Records.
The never-dying sub-genre of metal, thrash will live forever. Especially when we have bands like Wreck-Defy throwing out head-banging good times like Remnants of Pain.
An album of hard and heavy riffs, squealing solos and powerful percussion all wrapped up in a vocal style that is part classic thrash and part classic metal. It’s the former that opening track, Looking Back seems more rooted in. The guitar hooks alone conjure up thoughts and images of the heady days of leather and denim.
18oz of Chrome is much more of a thrash track. The cocking and firing of a gun introducing a raging torrent of heavy as balls riffs. Fast, angry and impactful…it’s the kind of classic head banger that that is remembered for all the right reasons.
To say Wreck-Defy are well and truly rolling now is an understatement. They’re really only have one gear (baring one track) and Art of Addiction just confirms that. Continuing to impressive with an array of riffs that just slay.
Blackened Cloth then opens with a dark voiceover talking of abuse in the American Catholic system. This is a passionate track, Wreck-Defy rightfully taking no prisoners with a torrent of heavy fury. Dark subject matter and a hell of a track. Easily, Wreck-Defy at their most aggressive.
“Your time will come”
Giving somewhat of a break in proceedings, Angels and Demons’ begins in slower and more melodic fashion. A metal ballad that even has some crooning before the tempo increases for a wild segment. Brief, it slides back and forth like a well greased bolt.
Broken Peace, The Divide and Killing the Children keep things suitably fast and heavy. Each new track another exclamation point on a modern thrash classic. So enjoyable, the latter of the three in particular, is an absolute beast of a track.
Finally, Riverview goes for broke with one of the most exciting tracks on the album. The meatiness of the bass and drums making short work of the senses. The guitars blasting out the riffs like they’re nothing and when the vocals do arrive, doing so with fire and brimstone.
