Interview: Talking Horror with Dr Space of Øresund Space Collective (Written)

Øresund Space Collective is a music collective from Scandinavia and Portugal that plays totally improvised space rock music. They have released 40 records since 2006 and call it music for your mind to escape the Matrix. We spoke with Dr Space of the collective about all things horror.

1. What’s some of your earliest memories surrounding horror films and at what age do you think you experienced your first one?

That is a difficult questions. Is Alien, a horror film?? I remember going to see it in the theatre when it came out and that was scary.

2. What effect do you think it had on you, either positive or negative?

I think I was scared but also it was exciting. It did not bother me and I was well up to see more of these kinds of films for sure.

3. Do you have a particular moment in horror, be it a specific film or even a scene, that defined your childhood?

I do not think so. We were a pretty normal family with not that much more drama than most families.

4. What used to scare you?

Earthquakes.

5. How did your early experiences blossom into a love of all things horror?

It all really took off in the late 80s when I moved to Berkeley and we used to rent films every weekend from Prof. Curtis’ Famous Cult video shop on San Pablo.. This was a place filmed with a lot of underground (illegal copied) films and changed my entire world. Films by Dario Argento, Wes Craven, Romero, etc… wow….

6. Do you have a particular era or style of horror that you deem the best? If so, which one, why, and what are some examples of the best of that era/style?

I have a soft spot for the late 70s early 80s Dario Argento films. The way he built up suspense, the camera angles… He was fucking good.

7. How about genres – are you a slasher fan, paranormal lover, gorefest enjoyer, etc, or is a little bit of everything ok with you?

I have watched pretty much all genres of horror from Cannibal Holocaust to the Polish Hellhole to Halloween, etc. Some of the Netflix series have been great. We have been watching this Vietmanese series call the Devils Diner. Wow.

8. What’s the best horror film to watch alone and why?

I have never thought about that and probably never watched a horror film by myself. I have no idea. I guess the People under the Stairs by Wes Craven or Brain Dead by Peter Jackson, as they are horror comedies.

9. Likewise, what’s the best horror film to watch with a group (beers and popcorn included) and why?

Extreme films like Cannibal Holocaust or the Human Centipede, as some people might need comforting!!

10. What is an overrated film or franchise? Please explain.

Not sure…

11. What is a modern horror film (the last ten years) that you just loved and why?

I think Hellhole from Poland is one of my faves the last many years. Amazing film and I hope they make a follow up.

12. What scares you now?

Trump and the general state of the world… and still Earthquakes.
