Interview: Perpetual Paradox (Written)

Ferocious UK heavy hitters, Perpetual Paradox, charge forward with the release of their explosive debut album, ‘Deathwish’, out June 27th. The much rated metallers have also just released a brand new single and video, Ash and Blood. In this interview we get to know them a little better.

1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.

Hey, thanks for having us! The band was started in London, initially as a lockdown project. With the ban on live music and gatherings, Jorge and Adrian spent time working together online getting first steps sorted and building a line-up. This is when the band’s first EP ‘Endless Cycle’ was written and recorded, too. That line-up didn’t last for long and in 2021, Oliver and Andre joined the band. That same year we played our very first show in Camden. We wrote and recorded our second EP ‘Monophobia’ in 2022 and parted ways with our drummer at the time then too. He was replaced by our current drummer Will who has been crushing the kit ever since, and the line-up hasn’t changed since then.

2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?

Aggressive, groovy and technical metalcore…take it as you wish!

3. What’s currently keeping you busy? A new album/EP/single release? A new video? Playing live, or planning ahead?

Right now we are focused on our release campaign for the upcoming album, we’ve got some busy upcoming months regarding shows and are always planning ahead!

4. What is about this current period that is particularly exciting for you?

Honestly…to see the world’s reaction about the “new” Perpetual Paradox. We’ve been cooking something special and can’t wait to share it with everyone.

5. Tell me about the work that has gone into making it a reality and what it means to you.

Blood, sweat and tears, honestly. It’s definitely been a hard process and a learning experience for all members.
We all worked a lot in the making of this album, from writing each track, up to the message and concept of the album. There’s a piece of each member in every song, even the final artwork!

6. Making music and being creative can be a very positive experience and can be very good for the mind. In what way has making music had a positive impact on your mental health?

For all of us, when playing live, we feel different. It’s a unique sort of happiness where you can enjoy all the hard work playing off to people moshing and kicking the shit out of each other. In a city like London, that can feel isolating despite the many people that live here, having a brotherhood in the shape of a band has been incredible for all of us.

7. It can also be incredibly challenging, more so in the modern times. What have been some challenging aspects of making music and how have you overcome them?

Thinking outside the box! Each member of Perpetual Paradox has a specific taste/love for certain genres inside the metal world…so blending all our influences is fun but really challenging too. It’s also challenging to get your head around everything else that goes into being in a band – networking, socials, making sure you’re getting your pictures and videos taken at shows, disciplined practice, studio time, music videos. There’s no guide to any of this, you just figure it out as you go along. There’s also a lot of egos in the metal scene – learning to navigate those has been interesting to say the least.

8. How do you handle the online aspects of being in a band? Having to put out content constantly, promoting across several different social media platforms, and having your success measured in likes and follows?

We probably speak for most bands when we say that it’s a part of the band life we could do without at times. It’s a cool way to network, show the world what you can do and brand yourself but it’s also pretty strenuous at times, constantly having to put out polished videos, pics and other content. We’ve gotten pretty good at it and a lot of it is automated – and we work as a team so it’s not just one person doing it. Ultimately it boils down to doing a lot with a little. You can get some pretty engaging socials going on a low budget, you just need to know how to put it together. The real plus side is of course the world it exposes you too – some of our best friends, especially in other bands, we’ve met through social media. It’s a blessing and a curse but it’s satisfying when a video takes off!

9. How do you make this part of things enjoyable, and fulfilling, for yourself?

We just try to see it as a learning opportunity. No job, hobby or pastime is going to be rewarding all the time. You have to grind to get the good stuff, and being in a band is no different. We don’t enjoy every bit of it but we thrive on the outcome. So things like this, we just see it as a way to upskill and then also as a means to our band growing and getting more listeners. We try to turn a negative, so to speak, into a positive.

10. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support you?

The usual, drop a follow to our social channels, spin our music, come to our shows, and if you can, grab a piece of merch to keep us going!

11. Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?

We love hanging out at music venues, drinking beer and socialising!
Some of us are gamers, some are into cooking, some are into going to the gym and exercising. We try to hang out as a band outside of music as often as possible. It helps that our girlfriends are all friends too so we all go out and get along as a big group. We also travel quite often. We’re surprisingly normal guys outside of singing about societal decay and death!

12. Where can people find you?

If not on stage crushing skulls, then all the usual places – Spotify, Instagram, YouTube, our website. All those good places!
