Horror Movie Review: The Hollow (2015)

The Hollow is a SyFy TV film production that is as generic as they come but will have you screaming in frustration thanks to awfully written characters.

Sarah (Stephanie Hunt), Marley (Sarah Dugdale) and Emma (Alisha Newton) are three sisters on their way to visit their Aunt on Shelter Island. Their visit just so happens to coincide with Halloween and a storm that sees the small town on island battening down the hatches.

Hollow 2

If all of that wasn’t bad enough, a 100-year old curse gives birth to an ancient creature in the woods. One made of fire & earth & with a hefty blood-lust.

The Hollow’s plot is paper-thin & never really tries to answer the questions raised, instead giving half-hearted explanations that elect ‘meh’ reactions. The main cast, the three sisters are awful characters with an incredibly frustrating level of ignorance. The secondary characters are mostly there to try & raise an occasional laugh or deliver backstory. No sooner are they introduced, they’re killed off a few minutes later.

Hollow 3

Not that it matters, as the trio of sisters don’t listen to a single word of advice. Instead choosing to wander off, scream each other’s names constantly & bicker. There is no excuse for such poorly written characters & the actresses hardly do much to stand out either.

Hollow 4

The Hollow is a boring film, with the only saving grave being some of the gore & effects. Normally a SyFy film results in pretty poor CGI but the creature actually looks pretty good! It’s just a pity that it’s not used properly making it feel wasted.

Hollow 5

There’s little to recommend here. Even if the plot wasn’t such a mess the characters are so insipid they make it nearly unwatchable.
