The Neon Dead is the perfect example of a horror movie that favours imagery over story and characters. While it looks pretty damn amazing (most of the time) its barebones plot leaves you feeling cold by time the credits roll.
Darkness Wakes follows Charlotte (Aisling Knight), a psychology student who’s looking for any work that pays. She stumbles across an ad for a job that’s enquiring about a cat sitter. It sounds too good to be true so she heads to the secluded, manor property to have an interview. While there, she meets Mr & Mrs Farrow. They come across quite eccentric but are nice enough and they are willing to pay her £200 a day to cat sit. It’s only for 3 days and it feels like a no-brainer so she accepts the job.
Inspired by 80’s slasher horror, Pool Party Massacre is a low-budget comedy horror that is far better then it has any right to be. Low budget 80’s inspired slasher horrors are becoming a sub-genre of horror in their own right by today’s standards and standing out from the crowd is very difficult.
Writer, director and actor Leigh Ormsby brings us an independent apocalyptic zombie horror set in Australia. An incredibly ambitious movie, it’s dark tone and gritty feel lifts it above many modern zombie horrors even if it does have some serious flaws.
Feral sees a group of med-school students having hiked into remote woods for a getaway. They then come under attack from creatures infected by some kind of virus. A virus that turns those infected feral too.
Written and directed by David Palmieri, Claw sees three friends (a term I’d use very loosely) go on a weekend break to Swamp Hollow. There they become the target of a psychotic serial killer. Why has he targeted the? Who knows and who really cares. Trust me, after watching Claw you really won’t.
Writer/director Joe Badon’s debut feature film is a trippy, hypnotic experience that has elements of David Lynch in it as it blends surrealism with psychological horror.
Happily The Houses October Built 2 is just about an improvement over the original. It still lacks a lot of what makes a movie good but has definitely learned a few lessons.
