Album Review: Tyrannosaurus Nebulous – Tyrant Lizard King (Echoed Past Records)

Tyrannosaurus Nebulous are a four-piece hard rock band from Stourbridge in the Black Country. They will release their debut album ‘Tyrant Lizard King’ on March 25th, 2022 via Echoed Past Records.

With an expansive imagination, Tyrannosaurus Nebulous draws on themes and reflection of pure sci-fi escapism that dives into alien conspiracy theories, SERPO, the Montauk Project, and the American Military’s interest in UFO sightings. The songs featured on ‘Tyrant Lizard King’ tell stories of a dystopian universe where a battle rages between man and extra-terrestrial forces of evil. Man’s only hope is to resurrect its greatest killing machine, the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex, modified with the best of modern killing and time travel technology.

With a name like Tyrannosaurus Nebulous, it’s no surprise that this album is conceptual and based around the mighty lizard king known as the Tyrannosaurus Rex. That is just one part of the puzzle though as Tyrannosaurus Nebulous showcase a sound that sits somewhere between classic 70’s hard rock and everything else. You’ll find your body grooving, your feet-tapping, your fingers drumming and even your head banging every so often to the music found on this release.

Showcasing some mammoth-sized riffs, rocking eccentricity and tons of energy, Tyrannosaurus Nebulous start the album off hot and don’t cool down at all. From the groovy vigour of Get Some to the ripping guitar sound of Underdog, to the racing liveliness of Lead Foot and the straight-talking, groove-intensive Hate You. To the darker and heavier sound of Deal with My Evil, and the massive, extensive run of rock infectiousness that is Raw Deal.

The first half is solid rock gold and that continues into the second half with the stomping riffs of Auto Pilot and the classic rock liveliness of Magnetar. Leading to the triple epic that is TLK. I: Extinction, II: Retaliation and III: Redemption. The story of the titular T-Rex showcased in glorious rock epic style, each track, an awe-inspiring journey of destruction and devastation. The most complex and most intriguing set of tracks on the entire album.

The perfect way to close out one hell of a debut record provided you don’t check out the added bonus ballad banger that is Never Gonna Be. You’d be fool to not though.
