Album Review: Taphos – Come Ethereal Somberness (Blood Harvest Records/Regain Records)

Blood Harvest Records and Helter Skelter Productions present Taphos’ highly anticipated debut album, Come Ethereal Somberness, on CD and 12″ vinyl formats. Hot on the heels of the compilation of the band’s first two recordings, Demo MMXVI & 7″ EP MMXVII (you can read our review of that here).

Hailing from the Danish scene, Taphos’ classically gutted style of death metal will come to fruition on June 8th 2018.

Taphos 2

A nasty style of death metal, Taphos have previously proved to be a band that take no prisoners with uncompromising and violent shifts in tone keeping things sounding fresh. This, their first full length, comes with high expectations.

Kicking off the brutality with the high tempo Impending Peril, it’s easy to spot some blackened metal influences too. A tightly wound track, Taphos weave an exciting tale of roaring riffs, crunching drum beats and vocals darker then the night itself.

A stellar start, it’s an early warning of the tornado of destruction heading our way with the remaining 7 tracks.

Thrive in Upheavel and Ocular Blackness are a bit more traditional played at a furious pace before the guitars of A Manifest of Trepidation works its thrash-familiar magic on the mind. It’s probably the messiest track of the album but still delivers that rage we all desire from death metal.

Insidious Gyres and Livores are bookended by Dysfori, 2 minutes of strumming guitar melody and Obitum, a dark and moody outro. This means the two tracks serve as the finale of the album’s death metal efforts.

Insidious Gyres doesn’t drop the ball, a raging wall of noise that assaults all the senses and Livores delivers the final nick of the knife.

Taphos have outdone themselves here. A major step up from the Demo and EP offerings, not just in production either. It’s death metal as you know it but with much more style, much more oomph.
