Album Review: Poets of the Fall – Ghostlight (Playground Music)

Finnish alt-rock band Poets of the Fall will release their ninth studio album ‘Ghostlight’, worldwide on the 29th April 2022 on Playground Music.

An epic build, energetic rhythm that slowly infects the senses, a synthy and gothic tinged vibe, Poets of the Fall introduce their new album in catchy and unique sounding fashion. Firedancer, the opening track, is eclectic and invigorating. A track that you could hear playing on the radio but you’d probably raise an eyebrow as it shifts and moves in unusual ways.

Grandness is the word that comes to mind with the melodrama of Requiem for My Harlequin. Here, Poets of the Fall combine symphonic lavishness with smooth rock instruments and anthemic vocals. A sure-fire fan favourite, it’s then followed by another wonderful slice of melodrama, one with tear-jerking piano melody and heartfelt vocals, in Sounds of Yesterday.

Revelations, Heroes and Villains, Lust for Life and Chasing Echoes continues to showcase the blend of energised alt-rock, symphonic layering and pop-infused touches that make Poets of the Fall’s sound so very unique. Each track having some form of impact, be it the drive to get up and move or the desire to sit and have some pensive thoughts.

This far into the album, it’s still delightfully interesting and consistently weird. Poets of the Fall are on an imaginative and creative high. Ghostlight, overall, proving to be something that will have wide appeal across a huge array of music fans.

The touching guitar melody and subtle vocal performance layered throughout Weaver of Dreams has these flare-ups of power that sees Poets of the Fall standing tall and with an extravagant amount of poise. The penultimate track, Hello Cabaret follows a similar formula, another slice of smooth and ear-worming melodious grandiosity, that culminates in a powerful bout of instrumentation.

Before, Beyond the Horizon wraps up the electrifying release with Poets of the Fall reaching a new level, if such a thing was possible, of pomp and majesty.

A captivating and consistently intriguing listen that delivers melodic anthems as though they’re going out of business.
