Album Review: Horrific Visions – Remnants Of Atrophy (Comatose Music)

A long time coming, US brutal death metal band Horrific Visions will finally release their much-anticipated full-length debut album, ‘Remnants of Atrophy’, on May 22nd, 2026, via Comatose Music.

You could make some good social media content out of the faces a person will make when first subjected to this album. Faces that will immediately contort as an obnoxious assault of heaviness slams into the mind. Perhaps it will be a frown, a grimace, a look of disgust, fear, contempt, or perhaps it will the opposite, a cheeky smile, a grin that sends cold chills down the spine, a lustful look, or even the blank stare of someone dead inside.

Regardless of the reaction, it’s important to note that a reaction is guaranteed because the noise that Horrific Visions creates is intense. A band that lives and breathes viciousness in all its musical forms, delivering the epitome of brutal death metal, albeit with an extra layer of cinematic horror.

I love the extra touches that Horrific Visions throw in here. The touches that make my stomach turn, cause my knees to knock, and guarantee nightmares for weeks to come. While the overriding experience is still focused on the symphony of savagery, these moments of bone-chilling discomfort break up the senseless assault in a positive way.

That being said, I really dig the BDM style of Horrific Visions, who have poured all their years into delivering a tight example of how to make relentless noise listenable. Although some level of attunement to this kind of extreme heaviness is necessary. As much as I might think it’s more accessible because of the extra touches of horror, it’s not really. Ain’t being a metal fan a bit odd?

There are nine tracks on the album, and several stand out. There’s Malnutrition, with its extended intro and outro that puts the mind in some deep and dark hole where wicked things howl. Then there is the self-titled track, which is a 90-second instrumental that comes with a lot of weight. Whereas Synaptic Decay is heavy on the atmosphere, Primal Regression perfectly showcases the sound of feral and furious intensity at its base level, and Remnants of Atrophy wraps things up in blistering fashion, before slowly sinking into the mire.

Gruesome in all the best ways.
