Album Review: Funebrarum – Beckoning The Void of Eternal Silence (Pulverised Records)

New Jersey based death metal band Funebrarum will release their new album, ‘Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence’ on May 29th, 2026, via Pulverized Records.

I just love how garishly over the top The Arrival is. As an intro, it immediately tells me that Funebrarum’s new album is going to sit somewhere between being unyieldingly grim and hilariously over the top. Which, considering how rigid extreme metal can be, is no bad thing. Though don’t let that fool you into thinking this isn’t a serious album, after all, it’s death metal.

It just so happens to be death metal with some ‘pizazz’.

They’ve been doing his for a very long time (forming in 1999), so I think a bit of experimentation here and there can be encouraged, but inevitably, at its core, this new album is all about heaviness. Something made so much clearer as the title track drops tectonic weight that veers wildly between traditional death metal, black, and doom. The result is powerful enough to make your brain feel like it’s leaking out of your ears.

It’s just the start though and things get even more grim sounding with ša nagba amāru and Through the Barren Halls of Grieving Emptiness. The latter of which has some groove and a cool guitar solo. Yes, this is heavy music, but it’s heavy music with a strong sense of the epic about it and the boldness of Funebrarum can’t be understated.

The aptly titled Into Dark Domains then pushes things into even blacker and doomier territories, before Ancestral Manor lays the symphonic pomp on thickly, crafting an imposing atmospheric sound.

In complete contrast, Anhela Odor Mortuorum (The Adepts) is sludgy, grubby, and ugly heaviness that pounds away, yet it’s so enjoyable. As is the old-school ferocity of From Rotting Burial Shrouds and the thumping riff-driven monstrosity that is Turning the Stones of Torment. Funebrarum really are such a great band and the vocals in the latter really get under the skin.

As I said before, bold, and putting an exclamation mark on things is The Whispering Cathedral – Epilogue. Not only is it nearly nine minutes long, but it embodies the word epic as far as this kind of sound goes. Not only that, but it also comes with so much potent death metal fire and vitriol. A highlight on an album of highlights.
