Album Review: BABYMETAL – 10 BABYMETAL BUDOKAN (BABYMETAL Records)

Japanese metal band BABYMETAL will release a live album called 10 BABYMETAL BUDOKAN digitally on the 29th of September with physical releases (including vinyl) coming later in the year. Taken from a series of ten exclusive shows at the NIPPON BUDOKAN in Tokyo to BABYMETAL that continued the celebration of their ten-year anniversary.

Has it really been ten years? Wow. Love ‘em or loathe ‘em, there ain’t no stopping BABYMETAL. Personally, we’re mostly indifferent to them. However, that hasn’t stopped us checking out a lot of their stuff. Often in the hope to have our minds changed. From Metal Resistance in 2016 to Metal Galaxy in 2019 and even seeing them live in the first quarter of 2020, we’ve tried to love this band.

Maybe a live album, where you can hear the crowd and imagine being at once of these insane shows, is what we need?

A 13-track album that features pretty much all of BABYMETAL’s biggest hits, a few guests and excellent production, it’s arguably the best way to hear this band. Especially if, like us, you want your live album to sound… live!

This sounds live, starting with the long introduction of BABYMETAL DEATH – Shin ver. Where you can hear the crowd roar as members arrive on stage. That is such an awesome sound when live music has been in short supply over the last 18 or so months.

Then it gets heavy, heavy enough to drown out the roaring and screaming of the packed out venue. The likes of Gimme Chocolate!!, Distortion, PA PA YA!!, Karate and Road to Resistance are enormous sounding and that is something even the biggest hater can’t deny.

The thing is, this isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. If hate this band, you’re not going to come out loving them. After all, it’s a best of! Which is exactly why, if you love them, you’re going to love this! As live albums go, it’s pretty damn good. BABYMETAL’s dominance continues and there is no doubt that they will celebrating many more milestones as time goes by.
