Album Review: Åskväder – Fenix (The Sign Records)

Electrifying Swedish rockers Åskväder hail from the west coast of Sweden, releasing their debut EP ‘Quick Fixes’ in 2018. In 2020 the band then joined forces with The Sign Records for the release of their debut, self-titled studio album.

Now, they return with a brand-new album called ‘Fenix’ which will once again be released by The Sign Records on March 25th, 2022.

No-nonsense rock and roll, Åskväder wear their hearts on their sleeves. Promising you a rocking good time and that’s what they deliver. A collection of (mostly) short, energetic and groovy head-bangers kicking off with the fast-paced, catchiness of Blurry Lines, When We Fall and Let You Down.

You’d have to be a stone-cold git to not have a smile on your face after these first few tracks.

Old Friend brings more groove but also features one of the album’s most ripping guitar solos and Claptrap finds Åskväder possessed by the spirit of punk for something wilder. Before one of the few tracks to pass the 3-minute mark arrives in the form of Heads Home. A slower, mellower and relaxed listen that has some poignant melody and lyrics.

It’s back to the more energetic bursts of rock and roll with Zealot and Nightcap, a pair of the album’s catchiest efforts. Both delivering choruses that just compel you to sing along too. Preach For Me is groove heaven with yet another, can you believe it, catchy as hell chorus and Deadlock keeps the good times rolling and the energy high.

It’s very impressive Åskväder have been able sustain such a high quality throughout Fenix, keeping things interesting and showcasing variety in simplified rock and roll form. It makes the final portion of the album all the more appealing and happily Åskväder ends things in style with the thrilling Reap What You Sow and Run Out of Time.

A banging slab of no-nonsense rock music.
