Devin Townsend – PowerNerd (InsideOutMusic)

An emotional roller-coaster of progressive rock with big uplifting sounds, this album has a loud voice and it’s one that few will struggle to pay attention to. Delivering bundles of feeling, showcasing even more heart and soul than ever, offering up dynamic catchiness in every track, and continuing to showcase his own personal growth and progression.

Enforced – A Leap into the Dark (Century Media Records)

There’s a couple of notable things about this release, the most obvious being that three of the six tracks are brand new. It’s those that will be most people’s focus and Enforced bring the appealing thrash and hardcore heaviness with them. It’s a good EP overall. Three original bangers, one remastered hefty hit, and two cool covers. That’s a mightily fine release.

Fit For an Autopsy – The Nothing That Is (Nuclear Blast Records)

One of the best deathcore bands out there who consistently release banger albums, Fit for an Autopsy play it safe with their latest release, but refine what they do to such a sharp point, it’s in danger of blinding the freaking metal world. A succinct ten-track release that hits like a category five storm, showcasing the absolute best of this band from both a heavy and melodic stance.

Friends from Moon – The End (Self Released)

Ritwik Shivam and his Friends from Moon project has delivered a highly enjoyable experience before, so there’s a confidence coming into this new EP. Something that proves to be well founded. The End is highly enjoyable and it would be nice to see if Ritwik continues to develop this specific style and story going forward.

Atreyu – The Pronoia Sessions (Spinefarm Records)

While it is fair to say that an album like this is never going to be necessary listening outside of the hardcore listener base, it’s also fair to say that everything Atreyu do is necessary listening. The idea behind this album is fascinating and what it delivers is wholly unique. Even if it is extremely melodic and poppy.

Gaerea – Coma (Season of Mist)

Remember this moment because it’s the moment that sees Gaerea step out of the shadows and prove to the world that they are a force like no other. Challenging all notions around extreme metal with a gleefulness that could be mistaken as wickedness. While this might not seem out of the ordinary for long-term listeners, Gaerea continue to baffle and delight new ones equally. Yet, even for those who have been with this band since the start, Coma offers up a fresh experience that explores new and exciting locales.

Taking the Head of Goliath – Futility of the Flesh (Rottweiler Records)

They’re not back. No, instead what we have here is one final blast of manic wicked heaviness to send all fans of horrific death metal into throes of ecstasy.

Turmion Kätilöt – Reset (Nuclear Blast Records)

Confidently striding forward with this, their 11th studio album, Turmion Kätilöt have worked hard to build up a solid reputation as an industrial heavy machine that you can pit and party to, depending on their or your mood. This new album continues their impressive run of releases with an even stronger balance of heavy party anthems and industrial intensity. All while not shaking the boat too much.

Elephant Tree & Lowrider – The Long Forever (Blues Funeral Recordings)

Sharing equal space, showcasing what makes them as individuals, unique, while also showing how collaborative they can be, both Elephant Tree & Lowrider deliver something special on this new album.

Seething Akira – Cancel Estate (Self Released)

How could you dislike this band? Even if their brand of electronica twisted core with a nu-metal and rock vein does little for you, their attitudes and perspectives are lovable. All of which comes through so strongly on an album that might be the most consistently brilliant Seething Akira release to date. Where, from beginning to end, they deliver infectious, energetic, intense, and heartfelt banger after banger.

Ixion – Evolution (Finisterian Dead End)

Ixion Evolution artwork

Ixion have shown an immense array of talent across Evolution. The album may be three different parts but they come together well and the storytelling aspect is second to none. It is an intelligent piece of art showcasing excellence in songwriting and storytelling abilities where the listener is pulled into the world they have conceptualised.
