Horror Short Review: MUGS (2025)

An award-winning horror short from Paper Cup Films aka David Padilla and Samuel De Angelis, MUGS stars Carlo Marks and Jean Rosolino.

Alex has returned home, it’s been a while, and he’s a busy man, but his father isn’t well, according to his mother. She is pleased to see him, but is clearly under pressure, so much so that she seems forgetful and clumsy. Not that Alex is paying too much attention to that, locked to his phone screen, unaware that things aren’t ok at home.

It’s when his mother burns her hand, and he is applying ice that he finally realises things aren’t ok. His mother looks at him like she’s never seen him before, and calls him George, his father’s name.

You don’t want this one spoiled for you, but rest assured, it is as tragic as it is horrific. Sometimes the most terrifying things in life are more real than anything the imagination can comprehend. The story is incredible, but the weight of this one comes from the acting, in particular Jean Rosolino who plays the mother. An astonishingly good actor.

This is one that stays with you long afterwards.
