EP Review: Runescarred – We Are (Self Released)

Austin-based progressive metal quartet Runescarred are proud to announce the independent release of their debut EP, We Are, on June 29th 2018. Rising out of the ashes of Texas metal stalwarts Dead Earth Politics and Texas regional axeslingers Southern Front (ex-Motograter), these power thrashers are ready to forge a name for themselves.

“We knew what we were doing when we put Dead Earth Politics to rest. There was no question of direction, zero hesitation,” says vocalist Ven Scott. “It was time to let the stubborn sun set so it could be reborn and cast more striking and wicked shadows across the face of an already battle-scarred genre. Personally, this album captures a multitude of emotions. I feel like twelve years in Dead Earth Politics was a path cut into a road that was meant to lead here. A three song E.P. may seem like a blip to many, but to me this is a victory cry. A ‘fuck you’ to any and all who tried or will try to impede our growth.”

“This was completely a DIY process – front to back,” Scott continues. “Certain elements sucked up our money for worthless endeavors in the past year, so we hadn’t the luxury to reach out to our producer, Taz Osterhouse, from the last three DEP albums. Instead, my little brother, axe-man and studio powerhouse, James Gelber, stepped up to the plate. We had many discussions on how we would address this, decided on D.I. drums (since drm replacement would be happening no matter what), cardboard box vocal booths, and a whole bunch of heads butting into walls. The end result fucking kills.”

Opener, A Darker Man is a nice blend of old-school heavy metal and melodic metal. One that shows of the wide array of talents within Runescarred. From powerful vocals that have a bit of the Dio about them to skilful guitar shredding and earth-shattering percussion. A strong opener that hits all the right notes for horn-throwing, leather-jacket wearing metal fans.

This is Mine continues that but ups the heaviness and speed to thrash levels resulting in a thrilling and complex sounding track. That and Ghost Ocean are the real showcase for what Runescarred are really about. The latter moves things further into the progressive side of things while not losing that metal fire that started the EP. Impressive riffing, hyper vocals and an underlying deep heaviness that pulls at the soul, it’s caps off a very enjoyable listen.
