Album Review: SPQR – No Brain, No Pain (Nuthin Gud Records)

Liverpool alternative quartet SPQR will release their brand new EP No Brain, No Pain via Nuthin Gud Records on the 30th April 2020.

Originally making their name on the local live circuit (where they now have a cult-like following) purveying a brand of jagged art-rock that at times crossed over into both the heavier music spectrum and more ambient, progressive territory, their current sound is deliberately more difficult to pin down—a smart, multi-faceted amalgamation of their deep love for, and knowledge of, a wide range of influences.

Says frontman Peter Harrison of the new EP:

These four songs in particular are a little different to anything you’ve previously heard from SPQR. I suppose this isn’t as new for us, as we’ve been sitting on these things for a while, but they take a long time to push through. It definitely feels more like ‘us’, like an amalgamation of everyone in the band’s tastes.

If you’re unfamiliar with SPQR, you will no doubt be scratching your head a bit after No Brain, No Pain ends. It’s very unusual, very eclectic and very unique. For all the confusion it might cause you, the over-riding thought that sits is one of interest and intrigue. This is a very clever and very moorish record.

From the catchy slide between soft and harder rock rhythm in opener, Nuthin Gud. To the peppy beat of Just Sumfin and mellow strums and taps of the title track. All before the warming and psychedelic energy of Loves Summer ties the EP up nicely.

It’s odd but we like it.
