EP Review: Necrodancer – Acts of Chaos Require Halberds and Late Night Sandwiches (Frozen Records)

Necrodancer, the French Belgian blackened raw punk quartet, will release their new EP, ‘Acts of Chaos Require Halberds and Late Night Sandwiches’ on February 14th, 2025, via Frozen Records.

A spitting and snarling blast of ugly punk noise blended with black and roll aspects and with a ‘tongue in cheek’ approach. This new EP is for the scuzzy. For those that like to lurk in dark places, crawl around in the filth and get a bit weird, here and there.

The familiar punk side of Necrodancer is on garish display from the start with The Romantic, but the blacker side of the band doesn’t shy away here. The end result is something quite chaotic. Whereas The Ritual is an unusual mix of aggressive heaviness and melody, showcasing a more imaginative side to Necrodancer.

Then, along comes The End, to make the EP experience even stranger. Not just because it’s nearly six-minutes long, but because it still manages to retain punk fire, while having a more methodical tempo in places, and burns brightly with blackened fire. It’s a very expansive listen, and all but confirms that this band is so much more than their genre label says they are. Interestingly, it actually ‘ends’ around the three-minute mark as it has a trippy extended outro that has effective horror vibes.

Keeping things intense and interesting, but with strong melodic elements infused in, Necrodancer deliver another banger with The Wizard. Before ending things with something weirdly danceable (just listen to the synth) called The Hero, an undeniably head scratching closer, but one that is enjoyable regardless.

Which sums up the EP. It’s odd. All over the place, but highly creative and very memorable.
