EP Review: Creatures – II (Old Haunt Records)

Creatures were spawned from the Toronto murk in 2015 and have been terrorising the world ever since. A six-piece band, their inspirations come from a wide range that include Necrophagist, Despised Icon and Thy Art is Murder. Unsurprisingly deathcore is what they play even though their sound delves into extreme and black metal too.

Three years after releasing their debut self-titled EP, Creatures make their return with ‘II’, their second EP being released through their own independent label Old Haunt Records on the 20th July 2018.

Creatures 2

Deathcore…if you’re a band specialising in this sound just how do you differentiate yourself from the rest? How do you stand out from the pack? Creatures have the answer for you. It’s simply by doing deathcore better then most.

II is five tracks long and flys by in an instant as barbaric riffs, bitter vocals, mind-bending breakdowns and a constant feeling of desperation wrap around you. This is not an EP for the faint of heart as Creatures have a habit of jumping out at you in an attempt to startle you.

Look no further then the breakdown that aims for broken bones on What Would Rick Sanchez Do? Chaos. Utter chaos.

The devastating soundscapes continue in the inhumanity that is Samara and Broken Anchors. Don’t let the unrelenting brutality of it all consume though as Creatures have a bit more to their sound. Namely a kind of catchiness to the rhythm that gets the foot tapping as much as the head-banging.

Capping of a brilliant listen is the ‘holy hell’ moment of the entire album as (Safe Space) destroys everything in its path. Creatures absolutely wreck your mind, body and soul with this grinding finale.
