EP Review: Boxing Day – Retrospect (Real Ghost Records)
Boxing Day are a five-piece band from a small town in Belgium. Formed in 2016 the band started off writing original material influenced by bands like the Wonder Years, Real Friends and Neck Deep.
Over the following months Boxing Day gigged heavily and recorded their first EP “Lost and Found” (released June 2017). They went on to support bands like No Trigger, Not on Tour, F.O.D. and Nowhere with their catchy, yet beautifully down beat brand of emo pop punk.
With an updated line-up, the band got in the studio for the second time with Tim De Gieter (Much Luv studio) to record their new two track EP, Retrospect, which will be released on December 26th 2018 via Real Ghost Records.
The highest praise I can give Boxing Day is that listening to Whisper Like You Mean It made me think of Blink 182 pre the self-titled album. The same bounce, the same catchy rhythm and the same pop-punk style. That’s not to say Boxing Day are copying them, rather it’s the comparison that came into my head while listening to the wonderful opener of this two track EP.
Expertly done pop-punk with enough leanings to the latter of the two styles to not leave guitar fans out in the cold.
The second track is also the title track and just as catchy but here the rhythm is much more downbeat. It works well as contrast to the previous track especially as it’s got a little more groove to proceedings.
Two great pop-punk tracks from Boxing Day to enjoy this Boxing Day.
