Band Interview: The Telling
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with Colm – keyboard player for rockers, The Telling.
1. How did you get started as a band?
The Telling was formed in the summer of 2019 by myself and another musician I had done some dep work with another Irish Band. We got on very well musically, we decided to meet up and jam a little and it turned into exchanging musical ideas and pieces between each other. The collaboration lead to some absolutely amazing instrumentals, when we had three complete songs we decided to see if we could get any other musicians interested in the music and the project. That’s when we got our drummer Paul, bassist Simone and Lead Vocal, Lindy Loo. Together there is an amazing synergy when we play. In summer 2020 we had to replace our guitarist with Tommy, who has fit in very nicely.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We have an interesting sound as we all like different music and genres and we put our own touches on the music. We get an interesting blend in our songs, I guess we are on the rock side of things, but there is a bit of everything in there.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
All of us have our own individual influences when writing, for me Queen, Elton John and Billy Joel along with many other artists and bands influence me when writing, but that would just be my element of input to the songs.
Other influences for the rest of the band come from Heart, G’N’R, Jamiroquai, Lady Gaga and Evanescence. Practically every female vocalist in some capacity. What we all listen to changes over time leading to other ideas and avenues to explore.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
I would say it has helped us out, it is easier than ever to get your music out there. It removes a financial element of having to pay for CD’s and trying to get them in stores. I know this is topical at the moment, but for “smaller” artists and bands, people are less likely to buy an album of someone they don’t know, but now they can easily find an artist or band that they don’t know and listen to and share with friends.
You could be out with a group of friends and say “ hey you gotta here this band called The Telling” then they take their phones and look it up on Spotify or Youtube and bookmark for later….for free.
Go back to the time of Cassette Tapes and CD’s, when you had to go to the store and make the best choice that you could, based on album art and what you seen the magazines or news and what your friends say.
Now you can have it all!!
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
If I am not making music I can be listening to music, reading, cooking, I like to learn new skills, One thing I would love to learn is how to mix and master.
I do like the outdoors, I like long walks, hikes and swimming.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Currently we are a little limited with the pandemic, but that is not to say we don’t have plans and surprises coming up.
At the moment we are focusing on the creative, writing and recording what we can in preparation for going into a studio to get some awesome new songs out there.
In addition to a few new songs, we are already making early preparations to get back rehearsing and it is that we aim to get a show on the road as soon as the restrictions lift and circumstances permit us to do so.
We are also in talks with other people about other projects, hopefully soon enough we will be in a position to announce something really cool.
Check out our facebook for that update in the next week or two.
