Band Interview: Alterpodes
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with eclectic indie rockers, Alterpodes.
1. How did you get started as a band?
Reyson met Harry in early 2020 – the pair started an online collaboration during lockdown, which quickly developed into a songwriting partnership and band under the name Alterpodes. Retro-Psycho and Cardboard Cutout (the songs on our new double single) were originally written in Spanish – Reyson brought the musical arrangements with him from Puerto Rico to the UK. Harry came up with new lyrics and melodies for the songs. Our drummer Robinson is a more recent addition – he’s also now involved creatively and we’re excited to have him on board!
2. How would you describe your sound?
The music is somewhere between post-punk and grunge and indie, broadly early 90s in feel but with some classic and more current influences too. Sonically speaking, an entanglement of noise and melody that comes together as a sculpted wail of single coils and dissonant harmony!
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Placebo, the Beatles, Jesus and Mary Chain, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Pixies, David Bowie to name a few.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
In general it has helped in terms of reach but it has also become so broad that it’s easy for a new band to get lost in the crowd. So it’s done both probably. I wouldn’t say we’re obvious beneficiaries of streaming or Youtube at this time(!) I mean potentially in the future that’s lost revenue that in the past we might have had as physical sales but right now it’s a fairly academic question. Maybe in some sense we have more freedom to self-curate as now the barrier of entry is a lot lower.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Reyson: I enjoy traveling and doing around the world trips.
Harry: going to the cinema, seeing live shows, trying to find the perfect jacket in vintage stores, travelling (with a UK spelling)!
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Harry: More – the next singles. Getting a liveshow together! The masterplan!!
I’d personally like to try and find an indie label for us within the next 12 months and do a tour to promote the band as soon as that’s possible.
