Album Review: Vitriol – To Bathe from the Throat of Cowardice (Century Media Records)

On the 6th September, 2019, Century Media Records will release “To Bathe from the Throat of Cowardice”, the first album by Portland, Oregon’s death metal group Vitriol.

Outlasting all genres, death metal is unceasing in its ability to turn heads and crack skulls. Even when innovation isn’t exactly an important part of the sub-genre. That does tend to mean we get a fair amount of blending and bleeding as release after release follows the same formula.

Simply put, if you’re not going to do anything really innovative, you have to be at the top of your game to stand out. Enter Vitriol…

Death metal. As straightforward as that. No frills, no nonsense. Just a debut that pulsates with anger. So why is it so damn good?

Well, the short answer is that Vitriol are playing out of their skin. This is the sound of band going all out to ensure their debut is heard and recognised for just how strong it is. The longer answer needs a little more analysis.

It goes without saying that this is a heavy record. It’s an expectation, after all it’s death metal. However getting across the nuances of that heaviness and just what makes it so huge sounding is another thing. All the parts of Vitriol come together to deliver a refined level of heaviness. From the roars of the vocals, to the screeching guitars and to the pulverising drums, it all marries together to create the perfect storm of metal.

It is non-stop chaos, constant and consistent but not to the point where it becomes unlistenable. In fact, it’s the opposite as you’ll find yourself eagerly awaiting the next track to see what else Vitriol her up their sleeve.

As debuts go, Vitriol have stuck the landing and the judges would be holding up their scores if it wasn’t for the snapped necks from head-banging too wildly. To Bathe from the Throat of Cowardice is a death metal album and one of the best you’ll hear in 2019.
