Album Review: Thy Kingdom Will Burn – The Loss and Redemption (Scarlet Records)
Finnish melodic death metal band Thy Kingdom Will Burn are back with their third full-length album, ‘The Loss and Redemption’. Out on January 17th, 2025, via Scarlet Records.

There are a lot of reasons to fall in love with this latest Thy Kingdom Will Burn offering, but none may be as obvious as the bombast that the album has. This is melodeath, but it’s grand melodeath. Delivering intensity not only through thick layers of metal but through bright and brilliant melody.
This lavish approach, classically melodeath, but so much more, is evident with the brash opening track, Perpetual Void. Thy Kingdom Will Burn start their new record off with blackened fire, but there are layers of emotionally effecting melody here too. It’s a stunning song that showcases the creative cohesion the band has.
Such a strong start could put many bands on the backfoot already, but Thy Kingdom Will Burn are thinking ‘magnum opus’ here and continue to display emphatic melodeath strength with the rampaging riffing of Obscure Existence. Followed by another powerful effort in the form of Martyrs of Killing Floor which finds the vocals dictating the intensity while flourishes of keyboard melody adds a dramatic freshness. Before the first half of the album wraps up with a pair of mighty head bangers called Forever in Dark and Escape from Solitude. Where the former’s chorus is so epic, and the latter is as majestic as melodeath comes.
A first half this strong almost seems to make it inevitable that there will be a dip in quality somewhere in the second half, but that’s not the case as both Suffering Sky and They Have Come bring meaty riffs, garish vocal growls, anthemic melodies, big choruses, and so much more to the party. Thy Kingdom Will Burn’s form is such that this album can proudly be called an album of the year contender.
As if anymore proof was needed, the final few tracks fly past in a blur of crashing drumbeats, screaming riffs, intense vocals, and eccentric melodies. Dreams of Calamity and To End of Times, as satisfying as anything else on the album. Leading to a final big and bombastic effort called Sydänyö, a track oozing dark vibes and delivering moody melody with aplomb.
Big? Of course, but so is everything that this band does on this album. It’s melodeath, but not as you know it. A stunning release.
