Album Review: Thundermother – Heatwave (AFM Records)

Thundermother will release their new album ‘Heatwave’ on 31st July, via AFM Records.

‘Heat Wave’, the title of the fourth Thundermother album is as succinct as the message from the Swedish high voltage rock’n’rollers:

Be ready, Thundermother will come over you like a sound heat wave! We sweep you away with our sound energy. And our goal is nothing less than Rock ‘n’ Roll World Domination!

Heat Wave’ is the musical expression of the lifestyle of the hard rockers: Thundermother don’t just play rock’n’roll. Thundermother are rock’n’roll!

Living and breathing the sound of good times in the warm summer, Thundermother provide 13 tracks to an evening of boozy fun with loved ones. A night that will be fondly remembered especially during harder times.

High-energy groove with opener, Loud and Alive before a more subtle, dusty twang arrives with Dog From Hell. It’s a sold start from Thundermother, notable for the impressive vocals of Guernica Mancini. Able to sing as much as she is able to give a bit of growl.

An early bar-setter arrives next with Back In ‘76, a super-groovy and sexy effort that has such a dive-bar feel to it. Before Thundermother fly through a handful of varying numbers which add much depth to who they are. The hot and fast Into the Mud, the title tracks’ danceable beat, Sleep’s super-mellow rock ballad and Driving in Style’s no nonsense sexy rock and roll groove that harks back to the heyday of AC/DC and more.

The variety in how they deliver their feel-good rock groove is what saves Heatwave from becoming stale as it goes on. This is a band with an absolute bevy of interesting riffs, memorable hooks and more. Even if one particular track’s guitars or drums haven’t grabbed you, chances are the vocals will. Driving in Style, Free Ourselves and Mexico pushing onwards with more even more classy quality before Purple Sky adds just a touch of progressiveness to the guitars.

Wicked stuff, leading into the latter trio of Ghosts, Somebody Love Me and Bad Habits. Three track that have everything that makes Thundermother such a memorable listen. Hyperactive riffs, thick bass lines, foot-tapping drum beats and kick-ass vocals.

From beginning to end, Thundermother deliver. The night might be over but thanks to this soundtrack, it need never disappear from memory.
