Album Review: Star Circus – Separate Sides (Diamond Formation Music)

London based rock pop outfit, Star Circus, will release their debut album ‘Separate Sides’ via the band’s label, Diamond Formation Music, on the 2nd of December 2022.

Featuring special guest appearances from Dan Stevens (Inglorious), Tom Draper (Carcass, Angel Witch), and backing vocals from Ben Christo (Sisters of Mercy, Diamond Black, Ricky Warwick Band).

The old-school rock flavour is strong with this one., but that’s not a complaint. Star Circus aren’t turning back the clock, rather they’re dragging 70s and 80s rock into the modern times. Creating a hooky, energetic, infectious and exciting album that just about everyone can enjoy.

You’re going to hear the words ‘catchy’, ‘infectious’ and ‘hooky’ a lot when people talk about this album. It’s easily the biggest take away from an album that has eleven tracks all hitting the mark. Just listen to the likes of Save Your Life, Love Is the Enemy and A Couple of Years to get some idea of just how stupidly memorable this album is.

Yet, words like ‘flamboyant’, ‘groovy’ and ‘sexy’ should certainly apply too. Star Circus delivering powerful and harmonised anthems. Pop-infused rock numbers that put big smiles on faces. Again, simply press play on the likes of Something (A personal favourite) and Just Like in A Movie (a bloody sax solo).

Even when the album takes on a more melancholic style, Star Circus still manage to make things sound anthemic and heartening. On Your Side is one such track that has so much heart and soul, but don’t ignore the lovely melody of Bridges or the drama of the massive Before the Song is Over. Again, some of the catchiest tracks on the entire album.

There’s not a single bad track on this album. Not a single track that fails to make your feet tap or your fingers snap. Turn it up loud, even the neighbours will love it.
