The Liars Bend Low is the debut album from Houston’s Pyreship & is out on May 26th 2017 via Black Bow Records.
The band had this to say: “We’re pumped to be releasing our first album ‘The Liars Bend Low’ with the excellent dudes at Black Bow Records. Five tracks of post-metal rage issues tempered by an unhealthy overdose of 90’s slowcore.”
The building guitar buzz & soft melody that leads into the sludgy sound of Gravity is an instant hit. Riffs straight out of the swamp & really grungy sounding vocals combine to create a sultry doom-infused sound. It’s a great start & things get even better when the fantastic Charlie Chaplin speech from The Great Dictator plays at the start of Machine Men.
A great speech from an inspiring man, the music built around it enhances the impact. A slow & moody beat, it’s filled with masses of atmosphere that echo throughout the skull.
The methodical pace, grungy but with very heavy riffs, continues through When Leaves Turn to Blood (some serious chug here) & into Die-Sect. The latter of the two has a nice Twin Peaks reference at the start & a slightly gothic edge before opening up to some of the heaviest vocals on the record. A mid-point increase in tempo offers even more freshness to the sludge doom. It’s the strongest track on this 5 song album.
The Liars Bend Low finishes up with …Are We Dead Yet? A nice, fast beat with some rhythmic drumming, it’s the kind of finale that sums up the album as a whole. Dark & oppressive but with plenty of uplifting moments. The guitar playing is fantastic, the drumming outstanding & the vocals mixing soft & harsh perfectly.
