Album Review: Cult of Lilith – Mara (Metal Blade Records)

“Necromechanical baroque”, that is the province of Cult Of Lilith. A frantic collision of death metal, prog, complex classical structures and any other style they wish to incorporate. Their debut album, Mara, is a restless, constantly shifting collection that is as imaginative as it is compulsive.

Mara will be released on September 4th 2020 via Metal Blade Records.

One of 2020’s most anticipated albums, there is some serious excitement to see just how far Cult of Lilith have come since their 2016 debut EP, Arkanum.

Kicking off with the roaring heavy energy of Cosmic Maelstrom, Cult of Lilith deliver an early banger that is filled with complexities that lift it from just your average death metal track. It’s a brutal track that lives up to its name.

Purple Tide keeps the beastliness up with an even more impressive level of instrumentation. The guitars and drums combine to create a sound that washes over and suffocates while the vocals range from scarring to comforting.

Although when it comes to talking about savagery then the Doom-inspired Enter the Mancubus is where it’s at. Before Atlas begins in a more chilled out and pretty way, although the meaty riffing isn’t far behind and Comatose sees the Icelandic heavyweights demand and push for the most intense bout of head-banging possible.

It’s pretty strong stuff as we head into Profeta Paloma and Zangano, the former an eye-watering slab of metal with an intriguing segment of folkish melodies. While the latter is an effort that is filled with all manner of impressive riffing and that brutality that makes Cult of Lilith such an appealing prospect.

Living up to the anticipation, the nightmare that is Mara ends with the classy and epic, Le Soupir du Fantome. A finale dripping in atmosphere but never straying too far from the ferocity that dominates this excellent release.
