Album Review: Casket Grinder – Sepulchral Trip (Awakening Records)

Casket Grinder is a death metal band based in Medellín, Colombia, formed in 2010. The goal was to achieve an old-school sound in the vein of American death metal without leaving aside elements from the European scene with which a distinctive touch could be reached. Its lyrics talk about despair, insanity, fear of the unknown, and delirium caused by mental disorders, or drug abuse.

Casket Grinder’s sophomore album, entitled ‘Sepulchral Trip’, features all the old tracks from their debut full-length album ‘Fall into Dementia’ before its release, rearranged and re-recorded, plus a brand-new track called ‘Acid Storm’ and a cover of Pestilence’s track ‘Suspended Animation’. It will be released on October 31st, 2022 via Awakening Records.

Sometimes metal doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes, all it needs to do is give you a reason to head-bang yourself into oblivion. Step forth Casket Grinder and their new record, Sepulchral Trip. A 12-track slab of no-nonsense death metal that is a great introduction to the band, if you’re new, or a great re-introduction, if you’ve been on this putrid ride for a while now.

From vomitus beginning to vomitus end, Casket Grinder deliver non-stop gut-punches that blend the different worlds of death metal. So strong is the furious intent of this album, that the new track blends in seamlessly. Simply put, Casket Grinder are making the point that death metal is everlasting.

Though, that shouldn’t suggest they don’t have their own tricks to grab and hold the attention. Their command of their instruments makes this a very listenable experience. Especially when the riffs cut through or there is a bit of soloing. At times, it’s dark enough to lean towards the blacker side of metal too. Aided into the darkness by guttural and grim sounding vocals.

The whole, brutalising experience capped off with a killer cover of Pestilence’s Suspended Animation.

If you like your death metal to sound like death metal than Casket Grinder has the album for you. Sepulchral Trip is meaty, mean and monstrous metal.
