Album Review: Blood Cult – We’re Gonna Take Your Soul (Self Released)

On February 14th, 2025, self-styled ‘redneck black metal’ band, Blood Cult will release their most anticipated album yet, ‘We’re Gonna Take Your Soul’, under Witches Brew and Illinoisan Thunder.

Now, if your initial reaction to hearing the term ‘redneck black metal’ is to scoff, be warned, Blood Cult truly are a unique sonic experience that combines southern rock, blues, and country/western with black metal. Yes, this is not a joke, and to make it even more absurd, it comes coated in old-school heavy metal Satanic vibes. Chances are, many will make their mind up based on one track alone.

This is the opener, Demon Seed and the synthy sounding organ is so loud in the mix that it’s downright obnoxious to the ear. Yet, there is a ‘fun’ factor to this track and the vigorous vocal delivery is quite addictive. It’s followed by a rip-roaring ode to the heavy metal days of old in No Escape from Rock, and the title track, which comes with so many vocal high moments that you might think you’re listening to King Diamond. J.R. Preston, the sole person behind Blood Cult certainly has range!

Not just vocally either, as I’ll Never Go Away arrives with groovy and bluesy hard rock vibes, it’s a sexy and sleazy listen. Before Bully comes with a heightened sinister tone, Playground Creeper has some pep in its metal step, and The Devil’s Child is diabolically infectious. The darker side of Blood Cult is always fun to hear.

Fancy some punk though? It’s a side of Blood Cult that has always existed and it rears its raw and ugly head on In the Full Moon. A lively body shaker with some really ripping riffs. Then, finally, it’s Love, and things get a little more ‘goth’. An odd end, but an enjoyable one none the less. That’s Blood Cult for you! We’re Gonna Take Your Soul is a unique listen.
