Album Review: Asbest – Cyanide (Czar Of Crickets Productions / A Tree in a Field Records)

On May 19th, 2023, Czar of Crickets Productions will release alternative/noise-rock/post-punk band, Asbest’s new album Cyanide in cooperation with A Tree in a Field Records.

Asbest’s experimental style and sound is certainly one of the aspects of this album that excites. If you’re a person that is always looking for something a bit different, a bit genre-bending, and a bit unusual, then this trio have plenty to offer you.

Beginning with a certain amount of abrasiveness, punkish spirit, and off-kilter melodies. Autodigestion is an attention-grabbing opener that leaves you intrigued to hear what might come next. Which just so happens to be something a bit groovier, a bit rougher, and a bit heavier. Called Dystopium, it’s one of the most enigmatic and exciting tracks on the album.

Keeping things sounding suitably punky, Hubris is a noisy bugger and thoroughly enjoyable because of that. Before the first of two Interludes arrives, featuring immersive melody and effects. It’s a perfect chance to take a breath as what follows, Declaration of Defenselessness, is as bizarre and thought-provoking as it gets. The crashing of instruments and meaningful spoken-word vocals makes for an extremely addictive track.

Keeping with the style and sound of unbalanced and eccentric tones, Mutually Assured Reduction is Asbest’s noise-rock infusion at its finest. A worrisome track. Whereas Restraining Order is ominous and roguish, the vocals working to give the blend of coarse and melodic instrumentation more weight.

Interlude II is a much longer ‘break’ and finds Asbest delivering something that can be rightfully called truly haunting. Before Cyanide for Breakfast wraps up this slice of eccentricity with the longest and most excessive track of all. Asbest pouring their all into something that blends and bends a myriad of genres, ideas, and creative elements into one. It’s a unique sounding track on an album that is filled to the brim with unique tracks.
