Album Review: A Vintage Death – Gruesome Shades (Archaic Sound)

A Vintage Death is a one-man band that mainly plays death doom metal, with various influences in the glamorous 90s black metal sound. Active since 2018, A Vintage Death has released one EP, one Spilt with Depleted and now, the debut album ‘Gruesome Shades’. Released on the 20th of January 2023 via Archaic Sound (DIGITAL/CD/LP).

As elemental and malevolent sounding as ever, A Vintage Death drop tomes of blackened death and doom metal with this debut full-length. Warped and choked by thick layers of dark atmosphere, each offering on Gruesome Shades has tectonic weight and unrelenting intensity.

From the mammoth moodiness of opener of In A Glimpse of Penance, to the chilling closer of In A Perpetual Lament. A Vintage Death creates a world that feels both grounded in reality and otherworldly. Where the crunchy chaotic bursts of death-infused instrumentation, doomy depths, and blackened based fire, meets epic vocals that alternate in clarity and drifting melodic moments.

Nowhere are all the great ideas that A Vintage Death has better encapsulated than with the Vetusto trilogy. Part I combining doomy weight and guttural growls with mournful melody. Part II sounding rawer and more dangerous, and Part III delivers haunting and methodical heaviness. Each filled with power that seems to draw from primeval darkness.

Let the malice swallow you up.
