Praetorian – Pylon Cult (APF Records)
Take sludge, doom, black, death, hardcore, thrash, and speed, blend it together until you get a brownish, sticky paste that smells as bad as it looks. Yet, it’s so appealing because you know it’s going to feel so good when it slides down your throat. Say hello to Praetorian and their obnoxious, but lovable, debut album, Pylon Cult.

The DSM IV – Negative Utopia (9×9 Records)
Sweaty, shaking, eyes rolling around the head, and completely lost in a world of hyperrealism.

Black Eyed Sons – Cowboys In Pinstriped Suits (Off Yer Rocka Recordings)
How cool is this? Not just because it features members of The Quireboys and Down n’ Outz, or because it also features an array of talented guest musicians, but because it is every bit an old school slice of vibrant rock and roll with massive anthemic qualities. Accessible to all, you don’t have to be an old rocker to enjoy what this album holds.

Relics of Humanity – Absolute Dismal Domain (Willowtip Records)
An album caked in darkness, which means no-one should really be surprised to learn that it’s also some of the heaviest and most brutal stuff heard this year. A statement that will likely still ring true come the end. It is an excellent brutal death metal album that will appeal to those who like brutal death metal. Up there as the heaviest of heavies.

Great American Ghost – Tragedy of the Commons (SharpTone Records)
Expect heaviness that is downright dangerous sounding and get heaviness that is downright dangerous sounding. That’s Great American Ghost for you, but somehow the quartet have found fresher, darker and more powerful levels to their sound here. Tragedy of the Commons is this band at their most brutish, while having exceptional creative layers that set the senses alight. You might think you’ve heard it all before, but their delivery is wholly unique, and exemplified by a series of tracks that showcase so much of what they have to offer.

TheCityIsOurs – Will You Still Love Me (Arising Empire)
This isn’t a million miles away from what TheCityIsOurs has done before, except here, it’s so much more refined. You can really tell they understand their sound and how to get the best out of it, especially when pop and metal are such opposing forces. Yet, when done well, they fit together so nicely and TheCityIsOurs are doing it nicely indeed.
