This week’s single slam features Gama Bomb, Thornhill, Blanket, Fuming Mouth, Movment, Bones UK, Enterprise Earth, Continents, Future Static, Penny Fountain, and END. You can read our thoughts about the latest singles from these bands below.
Gama Bomb – Rusted Gold
Irish thrash metal legends Gama Bomb have shared their new single and music video, the rollicking ‘Rusted Gold’. It is the second track to be taken from Gama Bomb’s forthcoming eighth album BATS, due for release on 10th November (Prosthetic).
Of the new single, Gama Bomb vocalist Philly Byrne comments:
‘Rusted Gold’ is a Thin Lizzy-style metal epic – it’s a western too, which I think Philip Lynott would approve of.
I’m fascinated by the role of Irish people in the American frontier times: their story is sometimes overlooked or reduced to a caricature. So this song is about an Irish cowboy, a refugee from the famine, who’s out for revenge on all the people who treated him as a second-class citizen. When you see how Irish people and culture were treated during the Brexit referendum, I think this is still a relevant story.
Well, this is a fun track from Gama Bomb. A track that sees them leaning away from their thrash sound a bit and delivering something that has energetic heavy metal and hard rock vibes. It might sound like the sort of thing Gama Bomb shouldn’t do, but they absolutely nail the combination. Especially as it is still undeniably them, and is still fast and frantic.
Thornhill – Viper Room
There’s a sensual sting in the air via the brand-new single Viper Room from Melbourne rock powerhouses Thornhill, out now via UNFD. Also accompanied by a brand-new music video featuring a lurid narrative worthy of Hollywood’s own infamous Viper Room, Viper Room lavishly introduces the first new Thornhill material since their ARIA-nominated 2022 album Heroine.
The Thornhill transformation is now complete, the surprise of their musical direction change with Heroine has now passed, and now it’s all about the future. A future that is very exciting for those fascinated by where they are heading. Viper Room is a good song, a song that has sleazy groove, excitable energy, and an overall anthemic vibe. It is a good example of this band’s increasing confidence with this new direction. If you’re still angry about that, it’s probably time you moved on, Thornhill certainly have. Check it out here.
Blanket – Euphoria
Blanket, the genre transcending band, have released a brand-new single (and video) called ‘Euphoria’. The new single comes hot on the heels of their successful tour with Better Lovers.
Bloody Blanket. This band are so unique and so damn interesting. A band that are impossible to label, aside from the over-arching tag of ‘being bloody great’. Euphoria is an apt title as the combination of dirty grunge, powerful shoegaze, alternative rock, and more creates a euphoric feeling. The more heard from this band, the more their brilliance becomes undeniable.
Fuming Mouth – I’ll Find You
With less than a month to go before the release of their long-awaited new album, Last Day of Sun, New England death dealers Fuming Mouth have unveiled the record’s 2nd single, ‘I’ll Find You’! The brutal, endearing new love song follows the previously released single ‘The Silence Beyond Life,’ also featured on the upcoming album due out November 3rd from Nuclear Blast.
Commenting on ‘I’ll Find You,’ vocalist/guitarist Mark Whelan says:
This is our first love song. It’s about overcoming all the obstacles between you and the person you love. No matter how tired you are. No matter how lost they get. Find them.
Don’t think for a second that a ‘love song’ can’t be furiously heavy and ferociously intense, because that’s exactly what Fuming Mouth are offering here. In fact, it’s a little hilarious that it is so ‘in your face’, especially with the chorus. It’s the perfect track to show someone how much they mean to you. Check it out here.
Movment – Crawl Back Inside
Irish alt. post-punk revelation Movment proudly present their new single, Crawl Back Inside, on Epictronic. It is the 2nd single from the band’s 3rd Album Reinvention, which will be available from Epictronic and on Bandcamp in November 2023.
The new single Crawl Back Inside explores their journey through life. We will all reach the end. Just as life begins, it will end. Is there nothing then? Just what we have now? We live in our minds, and we will crawl back inside at the very end. On their new single Movment look deep within and wait on the moment of ending when they will Crawl Back Inside.
A creative piece of music that is fascinatingly peculiar, taking its props from the delectable taste of post-punk but twisting it via the medium of rock. The term ‘alternative’ doesn’t mean a lot as it’s quite all-encompassing, but Movment embody it. Crawl Back Inside is weird and wonderful, far more infectious than it has any right to be, and will be stuck in the brain for some time afterwards. Check it out here.
Green Lung – One for Sorrow
Less than a month from the release of their hotly anticipated third album, This Heathen Land through Nuclear Blast Records on 3rd November, London’s Green Lung have released their heaviest song to date, ‘One for Sorrow’.
Are you excited for the new Green Lung album yet? Of course you are, and you’ve not even heard the doomy, horror-synth-laden beast that is One for the Sorrow. No one needed reminding that Green Lung have this side to them, yet, no one will be complaining as this is a spectacular effort. Doom at its most beautiful sounding, Green Lung bury their way into the brain and with a track this strong, there is no dislodging them.
Bones UK – Ride
Bones UK are tackling toxic masculinity in their new single and music video for ‘Ride’, streaming now via Sumerian Records.
Speaking about the track, the band shared:
‘Ride’ is a response to toxic masculinity and the pressure people feel to buy certain things or to look a certain way. No amount of money can buy cool or happiness. It’s not about the size of the machine it’s what you do with it, that ALWAYS counts. So many people, men and women, live their lives thinking that the more they have, and the shinier and newer what they have is, the happier they will be. And the more fulfilled their lives will feel. For men the phrase, “bigger is better” is always being thrown about. And we wanted to turn all of those ideas on their head. Maybe it’s less about “big dick energy” and more about “don’t BE A DICK energy.
Pulling no punches with straight-forward lyrical content, but in a mocking way, if you’re offended by what Bones UK are saying here, your part of the problem. However, it’s a song that will certainly divide opinion. Yes, it’s catchy and memorable, but the blend of punk and electronica falls a bit short of quality. It’s an alright song with a damn good message. Check it out here.
Enterprise Earth – King of Ruination
Enterprise Earth have made their triumphant return with the announcement of their forthcoming new album, Death: An Anthology, stacked with features from some of deathcore’s finest including but not limited to, Matt Heafy (Trivium), Darius Tehrani (Spite), and Wes Hauch (Alluvial). The upcoming full-length will be released on 2nd February via MNRK Heavy.
In celebration of the news, the band has unleashed their apocalyptic new single ‘King of Ruination’ featuring Ben Duerr from Shadow of Intent along with the hauntingly brutal official music video directed by Nick Chance.
The band commented:
‘King of Ruination’ ushers in the new era of Enterprise Earth, a violent and punishing force of groove-centric metal. This is merely a glimpse of what we have in store for you all on Death: An Anthology, thank you for listening.
If this single is anything to go by, then Enterprise Earth are going to setting the bar for albums in 2024 extremely high, extremely early on. King of Ruination is meaty listen, but with some erratic and scathing technicality that calls to the likes of Meshuggah. It goes hard from the first second to the very last, and leaves the listener breathless.
Continents – Lifeline
Welsh metalcore band Continents are proud to announce details of their forthcoming EP ‘Lifeline’. Claimed by the band as an “EP for the overthinkers”, ‘Lifeline’ sees Continents create the most authentic version of themselves. The EP will be released on 24th November 2023 and is available on a limited translucent purple cassette.
Alongside the announcement, Continents have also today dropped the EP’s lead single ‘Hurricane’. It follows their previous single ‘Lifeline’ which will also feature on the upcoming EP.
After an initial shaky start (that opening electronica is so bland), Continents really come to life and show exactly what they’re made of with a whirlwind of energy and intensity. Showcasing a developed metalcore palette, this track has a chaotic vibe, without actively being all over the place. Yet, it’s the passion that Continents pour into it that most will remember. Check it out here.
Future Static – The Hourglass
Melbourne five-piece Future Static share ‘The Hourglass’, the next single taken from their highly anticipated debut album, Liminality, out 24th November 2023 via Wild Thing Records.
The Future Static train keeps on rolling on and the band continue to prove why they are one of the most exciting things in modern metal right now. Delivering the perfect contrast of heaviness and melody, going extremely hard when the time calls for it, but also hitting melodic highs that are downright inspiring. Future Static are killing it right now, and its tracks like this that prove it.
Penny Fountain – BRAINZ!!!
With Halloween right around the corner, pop punk/alternative rock band Penny Fountain have released their new single, ‘BRAINZ!!!’.
The perfect pop-punk track to mark the spooky season, Penny Fountain pay tribute to the some of the horror punk greats of the past with a fast-paced, bouncy, and anthemic tune. Fans of this sound will find themselves right at home, and it will surely be part of many Halloween party playlists going forward. Check it out here.
END – Thaw
END will release their second album The Sin of Human Frailty on 27th October via Closed Casket Activities. They have now released the new single ‘Thaw’, which features guest vocals from Debbie Gough of Heriot.
The band comment:
‘Thaw’ is a thematically more bizarre exploration into electronics for END.
It’s a very boundary-less song and one of the more self-fulfilling moments found in the writing process. As a musician it’s important to express the purest intent of your thoughts, and sometimes that requires reaching beyond the normal instrumentation one is accustomed to. The result is something new for us, but also a part of us.
Thank you to Debbie Gough of Heriot for lending her voice to the track. And thank you for giving this new creative passage a listen.
Stop us, if you’ve heard this one before, but END’s new track is f**king brutal. It’s the END way and anyone expecting anything different is a fool. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a ‘heard it all before’ situation here. Thaw has some really strong industrial vibes that give it a meaner edge and, of course, Debbie Gough of Heriot absolutely kills it here. It’s a bit of an abrasive banger.
