Horror Short Review: Catcalls (2017)

Written and directed by Kate Dolan, produced by Aoife Kelly, and starring Martin O’Sullivan, Edel Murphy, Francesca Saunders and Sarah Kinlen, Catcalls is all about consequences.

Based on a true story (possible, at least as far as an important aspect goes), Catcalls begins in sinister fashion. An unknown man is driving around town late at night, clearly looking for something or someone. Spying two young women walking down the road, he pulls up next to them and asks for directions.

This is all so he can expose himself, flashing the women, and getting a cheap thrill. As he drives away, he is very pleased with himself, but he’s about to find out that he picked the wrong women tonight. He might have started off the night as ‘hunter’ but he will end it as ‘prey’.

An excellent horror short that explores the themes of street harassment and the idea of women being made victims in safe spaces like their own communities. How many women all over the world have been subjected to harassment like this (and more) when all they’re trying to do is go about their business? It’s a tale as old as time, one that should be taken seriously, but Katie Dolan and the cast have some fun turning the tables on predatory men.
