Horror Movie Review: Psycho Goreman (2020)

PG: Psycho Goreman, or simply Psycho Goreman, is a 2020 Canadian science fantasy action horror-comedy film written and directed by Steven Kostanski.

Siblings Mimi and Luke discover a strange, glowing gem while digging in their garden. That night, an alien monster emerges from the hole. The monster enters an old shoe factory and brutally kills a group of thieves hiding out there. The next day, Mimi and Luke follow a trail to the shoe factory and discover the monster, who identifies himself. He is the “Arch-Duke of Nightmares”, a deadly alien warrior imprisoned on earth after attempting to destroy the galaxy in a rampage.

Before he can kill them, he realises Mimi has the gem, which allows her to command him. Mimi dubs the alien “Psycho Goreman” (or “PG” for short) and begins commanding PG around despite Luke’s concerns. A group of aliens called the “Planetary Alliance” discover PG has escaped imprisonment. They send the warrior Pandora to Earth in the form of a human woman to kill him.

PG tells the children he was a slave to the Templars, Pandora’s religious order on his home planet Gigax. Until he discovered the gem which bonded with him, giving immense power. He assembled an army called “The Paladins Obsidian” and battled the Templars. They began a rampage across the galaxy until the Planetary Alliance defeated him and imprisoned him on Earth. When the children leave, PG broadcasts a call for help to the Paladins Obsidian.

Mimi and Luke’s parents Susan and Greg see PG and Mimi introduces him to them, showing how she can control him. Mimi forces PG to accompany the family on activities, and he becomes a reluctant friend to the family.

Has Mimi bitten off more she can chew? What kind of shenanigans will they get up to with their new bestie? Watch and find out.

Psycho Goreman is the very definition of horror comedy, my favourite horror genre. I had so much fun with this one and I have to immediately jump into singing this films praises.

For starters, the amount of practical effects and costumes they made for this movie, is incredible. The effects look damn good and very realistic. As for the costumes, each one is so creative and detailed. PG’s is especially fantastic because of the range of motion he has. His costume is up there with the likes of Wishmaster for sure. The prop, effects and costuming teams deserve to win awards for their work here.

On top of spectacular gore, Psycho Goreman is goddamn hilarious! It hit all the right notes and had me laughing almost constantly.

The acting was on the whole very good and very silly. PG is undoubtedly the standout, with all the best one liners. Additionally, he surprisingly has a deep back story and character development. Which is more than you’d expect from a movie like this. Maybe I’m as insane as Mimi but I felt genuinely heartwarmed by PG’s story.

People always say they wish they made more movies like the 80s. Well here it is! How this film has been slept on, I have no idea. My only regret is not watching it sooner. Truly one of the most underrated movies of the last 5 years at least.

Soundtrack was fantastic and includes 3 personalised songs just for the movie that are catchy as hell!

Overall, if you enjoy horror comedy, hammy 80s movies, hunky boys and insane practical effects and costuming then this is right up your street.
