EP Review: State Of You – On A Knife’s Edge (Silent Cult)
Released on January 24th, 2025, via Silent Cult, ‘On a Knife’s Edge’ is the new EP from the heavy rock and hardcore-infused band, State of You.
Beginning things with a bang, it really doesn’t take long for State of You to unleash some cathartic and chaotic energy with Cut the Rope. A heavy and fast anthem that showcases the thing that makes State of You such an exciting listen, their ability to be so anthemic even when going wild. The chorus of this track is brilliant.
They’re burning up with passion and expelling the intensity in style. Getting a bit more forceful, both instrumentally and vocally, with To the Core. Then adding moody melody to the mix with the expressive Under the Wire. A series of tracks that show just how great this band is, and just how consistent they are. The first half of the record all but confirms this as an EP of the year contender already.
Which isn’t changing when there’s Double Barrelled to enjoy. A grin-inducing blast of rock catchiness, twisted by frantic hardcore heaviness, and with a chorus that delivers something a bit different thanks to the clean singing. So heavy in places, so melodic in others, and totally unforgettable overall. It’s one of the EP’s best.
Although that could apply to just about any track here, including the head banging and body shaking Two of a Kind and the manic, almost dangerous, Which Way the Water Flows. Two more bangers to wrap up such a strong EP. What a band.
