EP Review: Solothurn – High Priestess (Self Released)

Solothurn, the heavy alternative band from Belfast, are back with their brand-new three-track EP, ‘High Priestess’, which is released independently on July 24th, 2026.

I’ve enjoyed Solothurn’s previous output, so there’s no hard sell needed here, but even then, I find myself thoroughly impressed by what the hard rock and metal band have produced. Having reached a whole new level of refinement, the three tracks on offer are powerful, addictively so.

High Priestess sets a high bar. Partially because the vocals are so grand, partially because the measured instrumental pace gives it a doomy feel, and partially because the last minute gets wacky and wild.

It’s a bar met and surpassed with grungy aplomb courtesy of the moody Breathing Decay, where enthralling melodies meet dramatic rock groove. It’s a track with oomph and stands as the EPs strongest effort. The vocals are stunning, but this is still a team effort, and Solothurn’s strength as a group is undeniable.

Lastly, it’s Hollow, and while it can’t quite reach the dizzying heights of the previous track, it does not disappoint either. Beginning in atmospheric fashion, it quickly becomes apparent that this might be a more elaborate track. Solothurn showing off even more depth across a substantial runtime, and guaranteeing this EP is considered one of the best of the year.
