EP Review: KOH – Golden Death (Self Released)

Darwin metal outfit KOH will release their new EP, ‘Golden Death’ on July 1st, 2026. An EP that explores the idea of stripping yourself back and rebuilding into something new, representing growth upwards despite hardship and the discomfort that comes with change.

Forward thinking modern metal with potency, KOH are an exciting band, and this EP showcases passionate heft that comes from an authentic place. Seven tracks long (including an intro), with expressive melody, exciting drama, and tons of energetic metal to enjoy.

A big intro, courtesy of Aurea Mors, sets an unexpected cinematic scene, but it’s short-lived as with Blasphemous and River Mirror, KOH unleash a style of alternative metal and metalcore that is rawer than expected, but identifiable, nonetheless. I quite like the rougher edge these tracks show off, especially as there’s plenty of anthemic properties too.

Immolate is a favourite though and all because it is straightforwardly fierce, with vocals that are throat-tearing in their intensity, and breakdowns that hit hard.

On the other side of that, we have Lightless and Follow Your Ghost. With the former track living up to its name by being a darker toned effort. Whereas the latter crashes and smashes with utter abandon, showing that for all their modernised thinking, KOH’s metal remains undeniably ferocious.

What makes the difference is their passion, and how they weave melody in so neatly, without it ever compromising their heaviness. Nothing exemplifies this better than the title track, which also happens to be the finale. It’s another personal favourite and the cherry on top of a thrilling EP.

Punchy and powerful, KOH have delivered something that stays with you long afterwards.
