EP Review: Katerina Nicole – Serene in Violent Oceans (Self Released)

Katerina Nicole is the voice of a storm—a haunting presence where fragile whispers rise above crashing waves of sound and the thunderous weight of darkness. Her music exists in contrasts: delicate yet unrelenting, a dance of light and shadow, where beauty and brutality intertwine. Each song feels like a ritual, unravelling themes of transformation, resilience, and the quiet strength found in chaos.

With her debut EP, ‘Serene in Violent Oceans’, Katerina invites listeners into a world as turbulent as it is breathtaking, offering a glimpse of the beauty hidden within the storm. It will be released on February 21st, 2025.

Persuasively powerful and monumentally epic, while the focus of this EP is on Katerina Nicole’s immense vocals, its alternative metal and rock instrumental side shouldn’t be ignored. Especially as a track like Catch My Breath, where there’s a bit more of a heavy bite, sounds great when paired with vocals that soar (and have just a little bit of growl to them too). You can learn a hell of a lot about Katerina’s talents here, but not everything, as the rest of the EP showcases even more depth.

First, there’s the commanding chorus of House of Cards, where a touch of turbulence proves to be so appealing. Then there’s the hugely melodic heft of Emotionally, Katerina’s vocals holding so much soulfulness here. Before Darkling comes along with some crashing and smashing heaviness, blended with strong alternative flavours that gives it more accessibility.

Which it is as a whole. The entire EP is very listenable for just about everyone, and that is where success is found. The more ears on this EP, the more focus there is on the talents of Katerina Nicole. Especially when an infectious finale like What I Know Now comes along to deliver a mighty exclamation point. If you thought Katerina had already hit a powerful high, then you’re in for a delightful surprise here.
