Refusing to stagnant, constantly evolving, and effortlessly making their music equally emotionally captivating and anthemic. It’s a really tough balance to achieve, but Hands Like Houses make it seem so damn easy and very few will find themselves in an argumentative mood upon hearing the title track and Flowers. Here, the growth within the band is clear to the ears, and there’s exciting differences between the pair. The former, tender and thought-provoking, the latter, potent with tons of memorable aspects, least of all a chorus that gets jammed in the brain. Both expertly blend alternative rock and metal in classy fashion.

Their endless passion is further on display with the punchy Love & Affection. A track where creative guitars really give the track some bite. Before the unforgettable DEAD arrives to show just how big Hands Like Houses can go. Delivering a mighty alternative anthem that showcases intense vocals, roaring riffs, experimental use of electronica, and a chorus that gets jammed in the brain. Even with all of this, there’s a notable moodier tone that makes it even more interesting.

The final two tracks don’t change a winning formula but do showcase even more the band’s broad musical palette. First, there is Warning Signs, a blazing modern alt banger that has the kind of accessibility that will turn the heads of more mainstream audiences. Then there is Wicked Game, the finale, and yes, it is a cover of the Chris Isaak song. Which, personally, I can’t stand, which makes this version a tough listen. I do admire that Hands Like Houses’ really make it their own though while not losing the recognisable aspects of it. Maybe you’ll love it, but I’ll just spend my time loving the other five tracks.
