EP Review: Ewigkeit – Depopulate (Death To Music Productions)

Ewigkeit is the long-running experimental metal band of James Fogarty, who also performs vocals, guitars and keys for Norwegian progressive metallers In the Woods. As well as vocals and keys for English cult black metal band Old Forest, and is the main-brain behind dormant heraldic templar metal band Jaldaboath (amongst other projects).

Depopulate is the new 5 track EP from Ewigkeit and was written & recorded during the lockdown period of the Covid19 pandemic. Timed to coincide with the global roll-out of the vaccine, Depopulate looks at the paranoia surrounding the virus, its social effects and the power wielded by the influential biotech industry.

The EP is released on all streaming platforms on the 23rd of January 2021 via Death To Music Productions.

Taking inspiration from the (far to) many Covid19 conspiracy theories that have become so prominent over the last year and combining it with a blackened style of melodic death metal. Ewigkeit bring an intense reaction to the events that seem to dominate every waking moment of our lives now. Albeit with a scathing look at some of the more dangerous and simply stupid opinions that are out there.

The subject matter is always going to be an interesting thing for a musical artist to cover and/or be inspired by. However, the goal is still to craft music that impresses, excites and garners some sort of reaction. Happily, that is exactly what Depopulate does. It impresses with the simplistic but hard as iron blackened death metal sound. It excites thanks to the melodic edge that gives it a bit more life and it garners a reaction by compelling you to head-bang away. The banger that is Plandemic does all of this on its own.

It might be made under horrid circumstances but it is so good it can be seen as a positive of this rubbish period in time!
