Band Interview: Lunar
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with progressive metal band, Lunar!
1. How did you get started as a band?
ALEX BOSSON: Lunar started between myself and Ryan Erwin. He and I had been friends since the age of about 10. Simply, we both had nothing going on musically at the time and even though we had both been musicians basically our entire lives, we had never really done anything together. Our musical interests were beginning to merge more onto the progressive rock and progressive metal stuff, so we wanted to give something new a try.
2. How would you describe your sound?
I definitely think we’re a progressive metal band. I think there is influence from many different styles and genres, but that is usually what makes a progressive metal band.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Opeth is a big one, for the style and for me personally. Tool, Haken, Devin Townsend, Steven Wilson, Caligula’s Horse. All have been big influences I think.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
I think it has helped. Especially since Lunar hasn’t had the opportunity to play live or tour yet, the audience would not be there at all if it weren’t for streaming platforms and social media. Not to mention I would have never been able to collaborate with many of the incredible musicians from around the world without the reach of the internet. As a whole, I think it’s really a great thing for bands. However, I don’t think the format is completely figured out yet. I think artists need more from these companies. But no system is perfect and this is still a relatively new thing. I think it’s on the right track to become something really great!
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Making music takes up a lot of my time, so there’s not too much else. Usually if it’s not music related, I’m doing your typical relaxing activities; watching TV, playing video games, spending time with my family.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We most recently released our 2nd album “Eidolon.” It’s available now in CD, deluxe 2x CD, limited collector’s cassette and on all major digital and streaming platforms. And, we don’t have a for sure date yet, but sometime before the end of the year, we will be releasing the album on a limited edition hand-numbered vinyl 2x LP! And aside from that, we’ve all been hard at work on album #3. It’s still fairly early in the process, so I don’t have much to divulge about it yet. But, suffice to say, I think it’s going to be the best Lunar album yet! Ryan (Price) and Balmore have been more involved in the writing this time around, and we have some more incredible guest appearances coming up on this one! All of which really adds to the diversity and skill that is going to be shown on this album. I’m very excited about it! Make sure to follow us on social media platforms for updates on all this stuff in the near future.
