Band Interview: Factory
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life bring you an interview with prog rockers Factory. Originally formed in the seventies, they reunited in 2015 and will re-release their debut album, Back In The Time Machine in January 2023.
1. How did you get started as a band?
We were all in local bands. Brothers Andy & Tony were in one band, drummer Laurie was in another, and bassist Jaffa was in a third. We were all fans of each other, and we had all thought it would be great to be in a band together. Finally, Laurie was the one who actually asked the rest of us.
2. How would you describe your sound?
It’s a variety of rock styles, melodic, heavy, Prog, folk & Irish jigs!
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
A lot of the Classic Rock-era bands, like The Who, Hendrix, Genesis, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, & Focus, plus many more.
4. Has the rise of YouTube and music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
It has mostly confused us, as it’s very different to the way things used to be done. I don’t think streaming has helped at all, as you don’t make any money from it, and it causes people to no longer buy music, which is how we would expect to make our income. YouTube’s kinda fun, and definitely more helpful than streaming.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
We all have our hobbies, for example Laurie likes model railways, I like classic-era movies, most of us follow sports, and we all have pets!
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We have some UK gigs lined up for August, which we’re really looking forward to! Our new album, Back In The Time Machine, is going to be released in January, so we’ll be doing promo for that. We’re always busy musically as a band, or individually.
